In the Netherlands, fatbikes are widely reviled; now they are spreading to Germany as well. Tuning cheap Chinese e-bikes is incredibly easy – and extremely dangerous.

Small wheels and a short wheelbase are not designed for such high speeds, says Dirk Zedler, a bicycle and e-bike expert. “The wheels can then start to wobble or shimmy until the bike can no longer be controlled.” Zedler says he would not let anyone in his family ride such a bike.
